The geomatics team are involved in all aspects of the collection, interpretation and presentation of spatial information. This ranges from plans drawn on archaeological sites by archaeologists, to landscape surveys collected using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and antiquarian maps housed in libraries.
How we can help
The range of services we offer falls into three categories: surveying, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Computer Aided Design (CAD).
We are also experts in database creation and management, and GIS project design and implementation. In association with GeoQuest Associates, MOLA Geomatics provides a fully integrated archaeomagnetic dating service to clients. The geomatics team take samples and locate them in 3-D on site, and the samples are analysed and dated at Geoquest laboratories.
Surveying
The implementation and maintenance of control networks and project grids, including those on the Ordnance Survey National Grid (OSGB36) and project specific co-ordinate systems
The rapid capture of digital topographic data on site, using GPS and Total Stations
Standing building and monument survey using state-of-the-art reflectorless instruments (rEDM)
Large-scale landscape and environment surveys such as earthwork complexes and fluvial systems
Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
Analysis of sites by linking spatial information to the finds, environmental and stratigraphic data
Cross-site and multi-site analysis
Multi-site thematic and landscape analysis including cross-referencing to geological, hydrological, topographic and communication network data sets
Statistical analysis of spatial data sets
Analysis of the distribution of specific finds groups
Distribution maps of SMR data
Large-scale landscape and environment surveys such as earthwork complexes and fluvial systems
Computer Aided Design (CAD)
Site locations planned and mapped onto OS digital data
Digital map regressions
Historic map analysis
The "cleaning" and preparation of spatial data sets for GIS analysis
Full-colour Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) and contour mapping
Accurate measured reconstruction of standing buildings
Digitising of site plans of archaeological remains for publication
