Evaluation

Where archaeological remains are likely to be affected by development, Local Authorities often ask for the initial desk-based assessment to be augmented by evaluation work in the field. Evaluation means relatively small-scale field testing, usually comprising a few strategically located '‘trial trenches’, and often based on a small percentage of the whole site footprint.

Evaluation enables Local Authorities to determine planning permission, and the nature of any archaeological conditions on that consent, but sometimes may not be possible before planning consent is granted. In these cases, the evaluation may be carried out post-determination.

MOLA carries out about 100 evaluations every year, ranging from large or small urban redevelopment schemes to greenfield sites. MOLA’s experience of working closely alongside developers means we can ensure that evaluation takes place quickly and efficiently, and is designed in a targeted and selective way to control costs. If we are involved at an early enough stage, it is also sometimes possible to combine archaeological evaluation with the developer's geotechnical investigations, so that further cost savings can be made. In all cases, evaluation is used to decide whether there needs to be any mitigation to the development for archaeological reasons, either through design modifications or through controlled excavation.

A number of evaluation techniques are available, depending on the specific circumstances, including geophysical prospection and auger survey (geoarchaeology).
