Celebrating the regeneration of Spitalfields in the Lord Mayor’s Show
12 November 2010
Museum of London Archaeology is proud of its association with the remarkable regeneration of Spitalfields over the last two decades, led by Michael Bear and the Spitalfields Development Group. The regeneration work required a major archaeological excavation involving over 100 archaeologists, and uncovered 2,000 years of history. The nomination of Michael Bear as London’s new Lord Mayor has reunited the project team in celebration of Spitalfields’ rich history, its strong sense of place and its enduring connections with its active, vibrant local community.
The team has created a giant artwork, based on drawings of the archaeological finds and history of Spitalfields that were created by students from Swanlea School in Whitechapel. The 45-foot-long canvas shows five scenes from Roman, medieval, Huguenot, Jewish and present-day Spitalfields. The scenes will be brought to life on the day by members of the reunited project team, as well members of the local community and traders from Spitalfields Market, walking alongside the canvas in period costume. The artwork itself will live on after the Lord Mayor's Show when it returns to Swanlea School.
The project team has had a blast. With thanks to all those involved in the creation of the float and the fun of the day: GVA Second London Wall, Exemplar, Hammerson, City of London Corporation, L&B, Corderoy, Osborne Clark, EPR Architects, Balfour Beatty, Montague Evans, Hilson Moran, Keltbray, Alan Saunders Associates, Byrne Group and the Museum of London.
