Excavations, talks and events

MOLA undertakes several hundred fieldwork projects each year across the UK. On many of these sites we have viewing areas, information on hoardings and hold open days.

We also aim to carry out a community excavation each year. Our excavations span all areas of London, with participants ranging from school classes to community groups and 8-year-olds to 80-year-olds.

MOLA and the Museum of London have collaborated on a number of community excavations, including:

  • Shoreditch Park, Hackney (2005)
  • Bruce Castle, Haringey (2006)
  • Michael Faraday School, Southwark (2007)
  • Arnold Circus, Shoreditch, Tower Hamlets (2009)
  • Burgess Park, Southwark (2010)
  • Altab Ali Park, Tower Hamlets (2010)
  • Brill Place - UKCMRI (2011)

Further information about some of our community digs can be found in the left-hand navigation and on the London Archaeological Archive and Research Centre web pages.

Even if we can’t get you onto the site, we can provide you with information on latest discoveries in your area. Please email enquiries@mola.org.uk if you have a particular question or research interest.

Talks

MOLA staff give talks to local archaeological societies, community groups, businesses and schools. If you are interested in getting an archaeologist in to talk to your group, please contact enquiries@mola.org.uk.

Finds handling events

We host a number of finds handling events throughout the year. These events are held at Museum of London Archaeology sites, Museum of London and Museum of London Docklands, and at other external locations. During these events you can handle archaeological finds and take part in finds-related activities.

School activities

We can offer school visits to our sites, where it is safe and practical, for example on the Crossrail site at Stepney Green (external link).
