Desk-based assessment
This is the first step in the formal process of archaeological risk assessment and management, as required by Local Planning Authorities.
Preliminary desk-based assessment of development proposals will indicate the likely nature and extent of archaeological remains that might be affected, and can help to suggest the best strategy for dealing with those remains.
Our desk-based assessments offer significant benefits to our clients, including:
- Early identification of archaeological and heritage issues - either at strategic acquisition stage or at project feasibility and design stage,
- A sound basis for risk identification and risk management,
- Production of a concise, coherent and robust document for submission in support of a planning application,
- Identification of key archaeological issues for the development design team.
Assessments typically consult a wide range of sources, including:
- relevant national and local legislative and planning policy;
- local and national archaeological databases;
- published local history, archaeological journals and other documentary sources;
- historic maps (e.g. tithe, enclosure, estate, Ordnance Survey);
- British Geological Survey mapping;
- air photographs (vertical and oblique);
- geotechnical borehole data;
- architectural and engineering drawings;
- site inspection.
Our archaeological assessment reports will provide an indication of archaeological and built heritage potential of the proposed development site, taking into account factors which may have affected the survival of historical remains. They include detailed analysis of the impact of the proposed development upon known or possible remains. Historic contamination issues on brownfield sites are also identified.
Our dedicated Assessments Team uses the latest technology, including ArcGIS geographical information system, AutoCAD 2007, air photograph rectification software, and Rockworks deposit modelling software. The team is supported by in-house specialists on built heritage, geoarchaeology and geomatics.
In addition to archaeological desk-based assessment reports, we also produce Environmental Impact Assessments, Environmental Statements, Strategic Environmental Assessments, technical reports and documentation to support public enquiry.
Based in central London, we carry out work throughout the United Kingdom and abroad.
