Excavation

The Museum of London Archaeology Service carries out over 100 site investigations for our clients each year, from small-scale trenching within buildings during refurbishment to very large open-area excavations after demolition.

Over the last 25 years we have refined and developed our processes to best satisfy our client's needs. Using desk-based assessment and field evaluation, we establish a predictive model for the site, which enables us to reduce uncertainty and risk in development programming.

We focus on consultation early in the process, so that any archaeological investigation can be integrated with the detailed design stage of the development. This highlights opportunities to avoid or conserve archaeological remains, ensuring that detailed hand excavation is only carried out where development impact is unavoidable.

We have a large professional field team including supervisors with many years’ experience across a wide range of urban and rural sites who are used to working in difficult construction conditions within tight timescales and budgets.

We take health & safety extremely seriously, and are one of the few archaeological organisations to retain our own health and safety officer to attend site works.

Multi-disciplinary teams are formed under the leadership of a project manager, who is responsible for all stages of the excavation. This ensures continuity for the client and a known point of contact.
