Museum of London Archaeology Service  wins awards

January 2007

At the British Archaeological Association awards on 6 November 2006, the Museum of London Archaeology Service (MoLAS) and the London Archaeological Archive and Research Centre (LAARC) won awards in all three of the areas for which we were nominated.

Best book

'Requiem' by Barney Sloane and Roberta Gilchrist won the scholarly book award: it was designed and produced by MoLAS on an EH-production grant and is an excellent advert for our high-quality production skills - special thanks were extended to Tracy Wellman for her design work, and also to Sue Hirst & David Bowsher for editing, Andy Chopping for reprographics, Bill White and Pete Rauxloh.

Best site

Prittlewell won in the 'most important developer-funded site' category, with a statuette going to Southend District Council; Ian Blair was on hand to accept the award (and be praised for his ability to withstand the cold and the wet!)

Best community project

Roy Stephenson et al won a runner's up certificate for the Shoreditch Community Dig.

Given that a lot of the BAA's efforts are aimed at supporting the important voluntary work of amateurs and societies, we were very pleased to do so well in all these categories, as it shows that the hard work of highly-skilled professional archaeological staff remains of the utmost importance to successful projects.
