Young archaeologists

December 2006

The Young Archaeologists Club (YAC) in Rotherhithe meets at the Pumphouse Educational Museum (Curator Caroline Marais), Lavender Pond, Lavender Road, Rotherhithe on the last Saturday of the month and is part of the CBA network for the promotion of archaeology.

The age range of the children is between 8 and 16 and we currently have 10, although the maximum capacity is for 20, so there are vacancies if any child is interested.

We have a wide range of activities. Over the last year these have included walking the foreshore to collect archaeological objects washed up at low tide on the Thames; looking at and identifying animal bones; and making Saxon costumes based on reconstructions from archaeological evidence, including dying them (ongoing project, which involves making jewellery and information on the latest Saxon evidence from Prittlewell). Last month we made a mosaic which detailed our location and our branch - Rotherhithe YAC.

Contact for those interested in joining the club can be made to:

[Note: all adult staff involved in the YAC have undergone the enhanced searches required by the CRO, in order to clear them to work with children].
