Shoreditch Park, digging for History

July 2005

Excavation is over, but not the investigation...

In the final days of the site, Museum of London Archaeologists located a complex of culverts and rubbish pits at the rear of number 33, which produced large quantities of pottery and other finds; the excavation of these features was finished prior to back filling.

Excavation was however only the beginning of the process of studying and understanding the site, which will now continue with the help of local historians and volunteers. The historians will find out more fascinating facts about the buildings and the people who built them and lived in them, the archaeological volunteers will continue to clean and order the finds before cataloguing them; and specialists will study various selected aspects of the finds.

It is intended to hold 'Shoreditch Park Excavation Open Days' for local residents during September.
