ICE Contract for Archaeological Investigation

November 2004

New 'Conditions of Contract' have just been produced by a joint working group of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Association of Consulting Engineers (ACE), the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) and the Institute of Field Archaeologists (IFA).

The new Conditions of Contract, the first of their kind, regulate the business relationship between the Employer and the specialist Archaeological Contractor.

It follows the pattern traditional in civil engineering contracts, with the investigation commissioned by an Employer, carried out by a specialist Archaeological Contractor, only that the contract is administered by a designated person named as the Consultant, rather than the Engineer.

The Archaeology Working Group was convened by Taryn Nixon, Managing Director, MoLAS. The Contract is available for £15 from Thomas Telford Ltd at www.thomastelford.com.
