Rotherhithe Young Archaeologists' Club

Young archaeologists on site

The YAC in Rotherhithe meets at the Pumphouse Educational Museum (Curator Caroline Marais), Lavender Pond, Lavender Road, Rotherhithe on the last Saturday of the month and is part of the CBA network for the promotion of archaeology.

We meet January to July with a summer break in August and resume again in September through to December. Our December meeting is usually the venue for a festive party.

The age range of the children is between 8 and 16 and we currently have 10, although the maximum capacity is for 20, so there are vacancies if any child is interested. There is a nominal fee (£3 as of January 2008) that we ask to cover the cost of trips out and visiting speakers.

We have a wide range of activities. Over the last  2 years these have included walking the foreshore to collect archaeological objects washed up at low tide on the Thames; looking at and identifying animal bones; helping with the construction of a Saxon artisans dwelling in the grounds of the Pumphouse, attending an ancient music workshop, visits to museums and historical places and working on the Museum of London Community dig.
