Central London Young Archaeologists’ Club

Youths searching the beach
YAC foreshore project

Do you want to be an archaeologist and uncover artefacts used by Londoners hundreds or even thousands of years ago? Do you want to make your own replica prehistoric pot, roman mosaic or medieval brooch using the original techniques? What better way to learn about your city’s past than by becoming a member of the Central London Young Archaeologists’ Club.

If you are aged between 8 and 16 and live in Central London (mainly in the City of London and the seven boroughs that border it) then come along to one of our sessions and join in the fun!

YAC object handling

We meet once a month on the morning of the third Saturday from 10.30 to 12.30 at Mortimer Wheeler House in Eagle Wharf Road, Hackney. This building houses the London Archaeological Archive and Research Centre and we have access to their collection of finds and records from archaeological work in London over the past 100 years.

Club activities

  • Learning about and handling prehistoric tools and weapons from the Museum of London’s Department of Archaeological Collections and Archive handling collection
  • An annual trip to the Thames foreshore for a spot of mud larking
  • Prehistoric cave painting using our own naturally made pigments and tools
  • Making Roman lamps using original methods and moulds based on those found during archaeological digs
