Volunteer's day out: London Transport Museum
3 March 2008
On 28 February 2008 a group of volunteers/students visited the London Transport Museum as part of 'Student Volunteer Week' and received a tour from one of their volunteers.
At 2pm we all met outside the London Transport Museum, 14 of us in all. A few of us had travelled there together by bus from the London Archaeological Archive and Research Centre and been educated by Graham, a volunteer, who pointed out different site code locations.
We were greeted by Joanne, their Volunteer Coordinator who had arranged a tour for us with Fred Ivey, one of their volunteers. Fred guided us around the museum for about 90 minutes giving us time to explore on our own at each section also.
Very exciting was the lift which is actually a time machine and transports you back to the 1800's and the beginning of the collection!
At 3.45pm we all gathered in their cafe where everyone was treated to a drink as a thank you from us for all their hard work!
Volunteer feedback
"I think we all found there was a lot to see - & for some of us it was fun to see how much it reminded us of our younger days! Also the cup of coffee came just when it was needed". Ruth, volunteer
"...to say how much I enjoyed the MoL' Volunteers visit to the London Transport Museum and to thank you for organising the visit and also for the refreshments". Chris, volunteer
"The London Transport Museum is without doubt an interesting place to visit...a social history of Londoners. The exhibits were well displayed and intelligently labelled....the cup of tea at the end was very welcome. A good trip". Graham, volunteer.
"Seeing the tube map for Tokyo on the wall was really nice for me as my son is living there at the moment. The models and cutaway sections were particularly interesting". Martina, Student Placement
