Community excavations

Buckets an spades, ready for community excavations

11 January 2010

The Museum of London aims to carry out at least one community excavation each year. Since 2005 we have engaged with over 2500 members of the community, enabling them to experience being an archaeologist. Our excavations span all areas of London, with participants ranging from school classes to community groups, 8 year olds to 80 year olds.

The community dig is your chance to come and join in digging, finds washing and uncovering local history. Our past digs have taken place in:

  • Shoreditch Park, Hackney (2005)
  • Bruce Castle, Haringey (2006)
  • Michael Faraday School, Southwark (2007)
  • Arnold Circus, Shoreditch, Tower Hamlets (2009)
  • Burgess Park, Southwark (2010)

[Note: there was no community dig in 2008]
