Jane Corcoran has worked as Principal Geoarchaeologist for MOLA since 1998 and manages the Human Environment Team, comprising environmental archaeologists and geoarchaeologists. Her team focuses on placing archaeological evidence within its past economic and landscape context, through the examination of soils, sediments and environmental remains.

As Head of Human Environment, Jane is responsible for designing and advising on the geoarchaeological input to all MOLA projects. Jane regularly examines, interprets and advises on the sampling of man-made and natural deposits in a broad spectrum of archaeological settings, eg, the Roman and medieval City or the prehistoric and later alluvium of the Thames and its tributaries. She also manages projects ranging from desk-based deposit models and borehole surveys to test pits for Palaeolithic remains and the examination of prehistoric alluvial sequences.

Jane and her team have recently been developing approaches to deposit modelling, working alongside our GIS specialists. In particular she has been instrumental in the design and execution of the Lea Valley Mapping Project (EH administered and ALSF funded) intended to provide information about the likely archaeological resource of the Lower Lea.
