Ian Grainger was appointed to the post of Health & Safety Compliance Manager in 2011. He provides health and safety advice for the organisation as a whole, and co-ordinates the work of Hascom Network LTD, MOLA's professional health and safety consultants.

Ian joined the Museum of London in 1985, and from 1998-2011 was Field Manager, with overall responsibility for the management of field staff. In this role, he held overall responsibility for the recruitment of field staff and their deployment to projects, including the appointment of supervisors. He was also ultimately responsible for field team logistics – the supply and delivery of equipment to MOLA projects.

Prior to becoming Field Manager, Ian worked as a Senior Archaeologist and supervised a wide range of archaeological projects for MOLA, largely concentrating on the later medieval and early post medieval period. He is the principal author for three MOLA Monographs generated by his work on the Royal Mint site at Tower Hill. These cover the internationally important Black Death cemetery there, the Cistercian abbey of St Mary Graces, and the Royal Navy victualling yard, which also subsequently occupied the site.
